Unable to open Word docs

Last night all OK. Today I cannot open a single word doc sitting on the
desktop or in a folder or even a new word download. MacOSX.3, and Word
for Mac X. Can't open Word Preferences, either. Quark 6 and Entourage
seem fine. What's going on? Help!

How do you try to open them? What happens when you try to open them?
Have you tried both double-clicking and launching Word then using File |
Open?
