unable to open Word documents

I recently installed Office XP which includes Word and
tried to create a PDF file in Adobe 6.0. The creation
failed. Now I'm not able to open my Word documents in
Word or any other documents (RTF, WordPerfect, TXT, etc.)

I get warning messages (!)

"Word cannot open this document template C:\Program
Files\...\PDFmaker.dot"

"Word cannot open this document template C:\Program
Files\...\PalmAPP.dot"

I've shut down and restarted and get this...

"Cannot close Microsoft Word because dialog is active.
Switch to MSWord and close dialog."

It asks for my Adobe Acrobat 6.0 CD and browses and
updates and still doesn't work.

I've gone to MS updates and downloaded updates for Office
XP.

I'm at a stand still and cannot use Word for anything
because it won't open anything.

HELP!
