Unable to open Word files

This problem applies to all my Office programs, but Word is the one I need to
use right now. I can start Word by going to my start menu and selecting the
program, but I cannot open any of my Word documents (either by File-Open, or
by double clicking the file's icon). If I already have Word running and try
to open a file, "Running Virus Scan..." appears at the bottom of the window,
and the program freezes up. Going into Windows Task Manager, it shows that
WinWord.exe is using 100% of my CPU. Now if I try to open Word by double
clicking on one of my Word documents, the program freezes up during the
program startup window.
This is a new install of Office 2003 (within 2-3 weeks), and I am using XP
home edition SP2. I recently used McAfee Quickclean to clean up my computer,
and I am wondering if I mistakenly deleted an essential Office program file
or extension.

Are you using Norton AntiVirus? If so, disable its Office Plug-in. If you
have ever had NAV installed (even if you no longer use it), the DLL for the
Office
Plug-in could still be registered.

Search for : officeav.dll

If you find it then go to Start/Run and run the following command:

regsvr32 /u "<path>\officeav.dll"

I don't believe I've ever had Norton on my computer. I searched for
officeav.dll, and came up with no results. I am currently using McAfee
Guardian (Internet Security, Personal Firewall).

Susan,

Thank you for the ANSWER! Norton was the problem for me
also. This solution should be posted in bold highlight on
the Microsoft word support center
