Are you trying to open it from Word or from Windows Explorer? If the latter,
first see how to re-register Word when problems crop up opening files
http://word.mvps.org/FAQs/AppErrors/ReRegisterWord.htm and if that doesn't
fix it select a document in Windows Explorer, right click and choose Open
with...

From the ensuing dialog select Word (winword.exe) and check the box to
always open with this application.

I've tried both of your suggestions and neither one seems to have worked. I
can open my documents in Word Processor but I don't want to have to do all my
work using this programme from now on. I always go to my documents and open
the file from there. I've tried opening it directly from word but that doesnt
seem to work either.

If you're using something called "Word Processor," then very likely you're
using Works rather than Word.
