Unable to open Word

I am running Vista Home Premium using MS Office. There seems to be a conflict
with with Windows Mail and Word. When I have opened Windows Mail before I
attempt to open Word, Word will not open unless I open it from a document or
at least it wont show that it is open. If I go to restart/reboot it says that
Word is open and needs to close before restarting. Is this a known glitch or
is it something I can correct?
