Unable to pull down menus

I am a Mac User (eMac). For some reason today I have been
unable to pull down any of the menus along the very top of
the computer with the exception of Fonts and Help (the
latter now only shows hide and show balloons).

I have tried reloading the whole of Microsoft Office 2001
software but the problem continues.

Does anyone have any ideas how I can get out of this.
