All of a sudden my Excel 2002, SP-2 says it can't read any of my files.
The files are .xls on my C: hard drive. I have tried opening them from
within Excel and from Windows Explorer. I get the message "unable to read
file" either way.
First, load Excel with a new blank workbook, enter something, save it as a new
file, close it and reopen it. Does this work? If not, you may have a serious
problem with your drive.
If it does work, open Excel with a blank worksheet and write an external link
formula into one of the files that Excel can't read. Something like
='C:\work\2003\[budget.xls]July'!A1
(replace pathname and worksheet name as appropriate). Does this work? If so,
then something may have corrupted your files. Do you run any sort of virus
protection software? If so, I'd suspect it's the culprit. If this doesn't work,
you may have serious problems. Start by backing up your harddisk drives. Then
seek real help from computer technicians in your area.
