Unable to read word 91 and 2000 doucumnet

I cannot open office 97 and office 2000 old document. It ask me to "Select
encoding to make your document readable." It is set to windows default. I
have tried all the suggested encoding and nothing works, the document is
garbage. I have installed office 20007, upated all the updates and service
packs. Can anyone help?
