Unable to record sound

(I saw a previous post on this, but no resolution.)

I manage a lab of 24 iMacs (G3, 400MHz, 128M RAM, OS X 10.2 and 10.3)
that are used to teach technology. The problem is that we are unable
to record sound within PowerPoint. (Office X and Office 2004) The
Sound prefs panel shows a signal on the built in mic. When you choose
"Insert->Movies and Sound->Record Sound" the record sound box comes
up, and the controls work, but no sound is recorded, not even white
noise. This all worked fine under OS 9.2 and Office 2001.

Does anyone else experience this? Has anyone solved it? How?

Can you record sound in any other application? I only have a problem
with PowerPoint and sound when the Mac is not set to record sound from
the microphone (could be set to record from the CD, for example).

I checked the Sound Prefs panel and have it set to "Internal
Microphone Built-in" and I see the indication of the microphone
picking up sound. In PowerPoint, as I go to record a sound, I select
"Sound input device: Built-in Audio," then "Input source: Internal
Microphone" and the moment I click "Record" the Sound prefs switches
to "External Microphone/Line in" I really think this is an OS X
problem, but would like to know what others think.
