Unable to remove beta version of Office 2007

M

maxklepp

After a lot of trial and error I was finally able to install the Office 2007
Trial version. However, I still have the Beta Version also installed. When I
try to remove this version I get the Error Message "This product installation
has been corrupted. Run setup again from the CD, DVD, or other original
installation source."
I don't have either of the original sources and am a little afraid of doing
it manually (only as a last resort). Any suggestions?
Thank you
Max

I have the exact same problem.

I gotta feeling this is a common problem. But how do we solve it?

I hope there is someone out there who knows

I also have the trial version of Office 2007 in and want to install Office
2007 pro. When I try to remove it from Add/Remove I get a message that says
that it is corrupt (it works fine) so I need to uninstall it from media.
The exact same message as Maxkleep:

"This product installation has been corrupted. Run setup again from the CD,
DVD, or other original
installation source."

I can't find any onpoint MSKB, but I found this half assed MSKB. I've never
been taught to run Office over another Office, but I have installed Office
2003 and retained components of Office XP (the tools) because they were
different.

This is so typical of the Office teams at MSFT to once again screw up
setups. They do it nearly every time they make a service pack with MSO
Cache screups etc. I remember Sloan Craighton MSFT and several people
having to jump onto the groups when that happened with Office 2003 SP1.

Obviously it's the old MSFT interview where they ask you to open a window
and the window is nailed shut or someone meets you in the room for the
interview and then gets up and leaves before a word is spoken.

Does anyone know what to do for this problem that asks you to put in media
you don't have? I actually had media for the Office 2007 Beta 2 trial and
putting it in didn't help. It wouldn't run lol with the trial on the box.

Thanks,

CH

Max--

Try this: (Same thing happened to me--I'm doing it now)--title isn't exact
situation because you couldn'tremove it via Add/Remove but it spells out a
manual uninstall.

One maxim you can take to the bank. Setup teams at Redmond for Office remain
confused year after year.

Error message after you remove the beta release version of a 2007 Office
suite or program and then try to install the original release version of a
2007 Office suite or program: "Setup is unable to proceed"

Thanks, but that actually isn't the error or the problem. The problem is
that the beta can't be uninstalled, and gives a message saying it's corrupt
(even though it works) and to reinstall off the original media.

Yo Milly what up. After furious head scratching that MSKB was the solution
I posted about 3 hours prior. It works as a facimile manual removal for
the trial whos relationship with the MSI has been screwed up in Redmond. I
also used the Windows Installer Cleanup Utility which helps for problematic
Office and other uninstalls/installs in the future. Good to see ya. I
drifted over to Office because the MSFT Office setup teams have done screwed
the pooch again it seems.

http://support.microsoft.com/kb/928218/en-us

I didn't have every single reg subkey (maybe 3 of them in the MSKB and the
first part of it was not helpful since the error where we couldn't uninstall
the trial version of Office is the reason I deployed it in the first place,
and the second part's MSI files simply weren't present but it got that trial
version out of there.

I'm going to ping some people on the Office team because the representative
number of people who are having trouble removing the trial is significant
and an Office trial is going to be downloaded until Office 2010 or whatever.

Glad to see lol you're still into furiously scratching your head.

Yo Mr. Hells--

I had the problem you and Max did and here's the thing with some of these
Office MSKB and a number of Windows KBs --when they are close they often
work.

I followed the directions in the MSKB that I and Milly put up. We put it up
because it was the closest approximation we could find. It worked for me.

I ran every step I could--you aren't going to have every MSI file or reg
subkey in the MSKB most likely, but I had almost all of them and it worked
like a charm. Then I went to Add/Remove and clicked on the Office trial
which was just a dead link on A/R after the manual uninstall that that MSKB
spells, and badda bing it's gone. Now I'm installing Office 2007 Pro.

I'd run it up the flag pole and give it a shot if I were you. It's going to
do the job.

Good luck,

CH

Hey back atcha! The KB article covers removing EVERY beta product installed which is why you may not have some of the references. If you installed the optional programs and took the full load (sorry) then you should have most of the entries in the KB article.

I know that uninstalling the beta can be problematic (had the problem on 1 machine but not the other 2). I am hesitant (oh heck, no I am not) to remind everyone here who installed the beta and is now having problems getting back their PRODUCTION machines that they were foolish in the first place to install the beta on a working and required machine in the first place.

Many of us here warned folks about the removal of the beta and possible problems (beta software is not for the faint of heart) but people blithely downloaded and installed away and are now in the whining phase, to be expected surely, but entirely avoidable.

Also, Patrick Schmid, a new One Note MVP, has some excellent advice on his site (http://www.pschmid.net) about the beta removal and a very nice Ribbon Customizer tool - you should check it out. I know how much you like control over how the software runs on your computer - and I am sure that Patrick would appreciate comments from someone like you.

Based on this correspondence I've got a horrible feeling that as a simple
unsophiticated Pc user I will never be able to uninstall the 2007 Beta.
Furthermore, from what Milly says, it would appear that its all my own fault.
I should never have trusted Microsoft in the first place and should never
have installed the beta. So now I'm stuck with £100-worth of new 2007
software which cannot be loaded and an email program which has stopped
working. Damn it.

So now I'm stuck with £100-worth of new 2007
software which cannot be loaded and an email program which has stopped
working. Damn it.

Milly Staples said:

Milly--

There is a caveat with that MSKB because removal of one of the subkeys will
trash Add/Remove programs. It got the job done and I have Office 2007
running well, but I had to restore one of the reg subkeys to gett Add/Remove
back in shape on an XP box. I didn't have the problem removing the TRIAL
with Visty (sorry for the caps but I wanted to make the point that this
removal problem is with the Office 2007 trial that was offered after Office
RTM'd on Nov. 7, 2006.

LOL I try never to be in the 'whining phase' but you're mixing the Beta up
with the finished RTM trial of MSFT Office in this case. The problem on
this thread is with this guy--the Trial of the finished product. I do beta
testing all the time, and I've long ago known that you either put it on a
testing box, or you use Virtual PC or some VM ware and you image or backup
well and you take your chances.

http://office.microsoft.com/en-us/products/HA101741481033.aspx

Download the new release for a 60 day trial:
http://office.microsoft.com/search/redir.aspx?AssetID=XT101645181033&CTT=5&Origin=HA101741481033

It's easy to confuse, and I had to double check the OPs post, but this
problem is occuring for a number of this not on the BETA, but on the
***TRIAL of Office 2007. AYK, MSFT makes a 60 day trial available of Office
(I think) pretty much throughout the course of the current Office version.

I never had any trouble uninstalling the Beta from XP or Vista any build.

The problem is uinnstalling the MSFT Office 2007 TRIAL.

If someone has to get a document out, well, the trial is one good way if
they had no Office version. They could also do it of course with the Open
Source Offices/document makers and now Google has their
http://docs.google.com , but I don't know if you can originate a doc with
it.

The thing is Milly, what we couldn't uninstall (you're of course right that
sometimes uninstalling any Beta--a Windows or one of the 26 now related
Office apps can be problematic) was the Microsoft Office 2007 trial. I
chose to use the trial like many people until I could get an RTM Office
2007. I had been using the public Beta, and MSFT sent me a B2 T Refresh on a
CD but that wouldn't work to allow me to uninstall the Office trial as the
error message said.

I wanted to post back up also, because that is one tricky MSKB--meaning
this.

1) I followed all the steps in the MSKB--I'm used to a reg subkey or value
not always being on your box when the MSKB says it could be although that is
pretty rare for me.

2)******After I ran the MSKB, I still went to C:\Common Files\Microsoft
Shared\and found a good number of Office 2007 files in an Office 2007 folder
in that large folder, and I deleted them.

3) I was then able to install Office 2007 and it's working well.

However, and thisis interesting to me, one of the reg subkey deletions in
that MSKB definitely hamstrings Add/Remove Programs because what happens is
it elminates the change/remove button for every single program. I
frantically searched for repairs for the Control Panel and Add/Remove but
didn't really find any. I tried to use Add Remove Pro, a 3rd party
anduninstalled some Office entries there (French MUI, etc. about 8).

I didn't want to try SR although I set a restore point before following that
MSKB, because I didn't want files to come back from the Office trial that
had caused the problem. So I back extrapolated.

I went to the MSKB, and added this subkey that I had exported and saved:

HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Uninstall\*0FF1CE*

Bingo. It fixed Add/Remove immediately.

I have to say that if it hadn't, I'd have been up a slight creek and my
next move would have been to do a repair install. This was on an XP box.

I had no trouble whatsoever, by the way uninstalling the Trial from Vista
(RTM).

The MSKB did the job and I had posted it up here a little before you after I
knew it worked. But I didn't know then, that the reg subkey above is a bad
boy (or girl) and it will disable your add/remove, i.e. the button for
Change/Remove is going to be missing. That's why it's a good idea to export
every reg key that you change individually. I was able to make a guess and
single out that subkey but it was a fairly wild guess since I'm not sure
even with my reg books (including Jerry Honeycutt's, how that subkey relates
to Add/Remove. I just read his pages on removing programs from the registry
but it didn't say anything that connected me to that particular subkey but
it sure is a key one--remove it and it will disable your Add/Remove
capability for sure. I'm going to try to email Jerry and someone like Sloan
Craighton who rights a lot of the Office set up MSKBs and see what they says
about both issues--the problem uninstalling the trial, and deleting that
subkey and it's connection with Add/Remove's remove/change button.

Patrick Schmid and his site are excellent sources. He posted a good deal
during the Office Beta on very specific problems including document
retrieval in the context of the new .xml format.

Thanks,

CH
