Unable to save changes to documents on shared AFP volumes

Operating System: Mac OS X 10.5 (Leopard)
Processor: Intel

We are experiencing a problem where users with correct access privileges are unable to save changes made to a word document on a Mac OS X file server. They can successfully execute a 'Save As' to the same location, but are unable to save changes to the original document.

Office Update: 12.1.3
Server version: 10.4.11
Client version 10.5.x

I bet it's none of those. But so far, we can't find out what it IS.
