unable to save in microsoft word

For some reason Word won't let me save or save as documents. When I select
either of those from the drop down menu it just does nothing. It also is
unable to auto save. However, when I open a document template, it lets me
save as from there. Also, other Office applications, like Excel are allowing
me to save.

Occasionally I get a message saying not enough hard drive space, but I have
cleared out a lot of space, and seems like this is not the problem since
other programs can save similarly sized documents.

I uninstalled and then reinstalled Office to no avail. Any suggestions??
Thanks!

I"m having the same problem. It wont' save AT ALL!!! Not when I do save,
not save as, not when I hit the disk and when I go to close Word, it tells me
it hasn't been saved and would I like to - I hit yes and still nothing!!!!
What the heck is going on????

Probably a rogue add-in installed with a 3rd party utility. What happens if
you try starting Word in Safe Mode? Hold down the CONTROL key and launch
Word: Word will start in Safe Mode where it opens in its default install
mode bypassing all add-ins, templates, macros, customizations, etc. Are you
able to save/SaveAs now?

YES!!!! THAT IS IT!!! Ok - so - now what do I do to figure out the add-on
and disable the add-on that is creating all my problems????

What did you try? Did you use the instructions to search for add-ins, since
that is what seems to be the issue?

Yes - I used the instructions and searched for add-ins. There were only 2-3
that were listed and I deleted them all. I rechecked for add-ins to make
sure I didn't miss any.. I retarted Word - still can't save. I restarted
the computer - still can't save in Word...

You shouldn't really have deleted the add-ins. I'm sure the article doesn't
advise deleting them. If you didn't uninstall them properly, then they may
still have left macros that are intercepting the standard Save/As commands.
Have you checked for any macros?

yes - it did tell me to delete them. I thought it was wierd too but I did..

How do I check for Macros???

The actual text in the article is:

"Some Add-ins are inefficient.

"Others are large and complex and take time to load. If the benefits of an
Add-in aren't worth the added delay, you can remove a COM Add-in by choosing
Tools => COM Add-ins, selecting the Add-in and clicking Remove. To remove a
global template for the current Word session, you can select Tools =>
Templates and Add-ins and deselect the relevant checkbox; or to permanently
remove it, you can move the Add-in file out of the Startup directory when
Word is closed. (or if you're absolutely sure, you could delete the file)."

It's hard to see how you read that as a blanket instruction to delete all
add-ins.

Suzanne - if you've been struggling with this for 11 working days to this
point now - you would understand how I would have read to delete them all.

I thought this was supposed to be a helpful area and not a "point out you're
an idiot" area. You are not the first one who has come back with something
negative. Are people out there actually wanting to help or just point out
what us novice computer people can't do right???

I have these four listed....

Auto_close
PalmAppAddress.MAIN
PalmAppMemo.MAIN
PalmAppTodo.MAIN

I'm thinking the PalmApp**.MAIN are for my palm pilot which I do not ever
use anymore.. No options to delete these however...

What would you suggest is my next step?

Not sure what this is a all about but I cannot let this go unchallenged.
IMHO this is probably one of the most helpful newsgroups on the entire
Internet and Suzanne is probably the most helpful person on it. Logically
this makes here probably the most helpful person on the Internet! Day after
day she answers posts from people at all levels and puts them on the right
path. So, assuming that you are a reasonable person this can only be
miscommunication. Persevere and I'm sure you will resolve this.

The reason I said that was because all she did was tell me what I did wrong
and give me any ideas of what I can do to fix it. If you read her last
suggestion - you'll see that it gave me nothing to go on except that I was
wrong and she's not sure how I could have ever read to delete them all by
what the paragraph she copied and pasted said.... Well - I've deleted them -
so now what do I do?? I'm fricken ready to compeletly crash my system and
start over except - I've done that once at home and was just as frustrated!!

If you're still seeing the Palm macros listed, then you haven't managed to
get rid of all of them. See if you can delete those macros (and click Edit
on Auto_close to see what it does; I would think it would have to be called
by some other macro, since it's not a real AutoClose macro). If you can't
delete them, change the "Macros in" setting till you figure out which
template they're in, then search for that template and delete it.
