Unable to Save in Publisher 2000 to Flash Drive

J

Jeff Driscoll

I work in a school district and one of our teachers uses Flash Drives/Memory
Keys (whatever you want to call them) for her students to save their projets
on. She's starting a unit on Microsoft Publisher and had the students open a
template off the flash drive and change it and resave in a folder on the
flash drive but all the students are getting the following error:

"There is no disk in the floppy drive or the drive door is not closed.
Please make sure that the floppy drive is ready, then try again."

-It is not a permissions issue - even the teacher is unable to save to the
flash drive from Publisher.
-It is not an issue with the template - if we create a new document and try
to save to the flash drive we get the same error
-It is not an issue with the flash drive because saving in other programs
such as Microsoft Word works just fine. It is just in Publisher that this
problem occurs.

Any help would be appreciated.

Try saving the template to the local hd first. Open it, do your edits, Save
As something to your hd...then check the properties of the file make sure
its not Read Only (if it is, un check that box) then move it to the Memory
Stick. Maybe that will work.

Strange that it thinks it's floppy though.

The only way this will work is if the students save their completed work to
the hard drive and then manually copy/paste the file to the memory key.

Any file in Publish whether it is on the memory key or not, won't save
itself on the memory key.

hmmm. Try a different mem stick. I've just tried it with Pub 2000 and worked
directly in/out/on my mem stick with no probs.

We've got 10 or 15 students in the class and all are having problems.

They have a work around of saving to the C: drive and copying over, but the
teacher wants an actual answer.

Publisher does not do well on removable media. You already know the solution,
save to the local drive, copy to the flash drive.

Are templates read only until saved as a document?

I'm having no trbl read/write working with an existing doc to my mem stick.

I'm having no trbl read/write working with an existing doc to my mem
stick.

It's an intermittent problem that will show up in some situations and be
completely unfixable, but won't appear at all in others.

Saving directly to the hard drive is by far the most reliable technique.

We discovered the same problem yesterday. It is a permissions problem
as I am able to save to the flash drive using Windows 98 or if logged
on as administrator in Windows XP.

Microsoft acknowledges the problem
(http://support.microsoft.com/kb/320950/en-us) but only suggests the
workaround you've already discovered.
