unable to save in Word using "file -save" or "file - save as"

In the last couple of days, I have been unable to save in Word using - File,
save or File, save as. The system snarls up with the egg timer displayed
until I end this by pressing the cross in right hand corner of screen. This
is the only operation I am allowed to do. I send error messages to Microsoft.
Please help
