unable to save in Word using "file -save" or "file - save as"

for the past 2 days I have been unable to save any work in Word. Have tried
"File save", "File save" or the save icon. The laptop shows the eggtimer and
the only way I can get out of it is to click on the cross at the top right
hand corner of the screen.
