Unable to save project in Project 2007

Hi,
I have a project manager who is unable to make any changes to his project in
Project 2007. When he tries to save his project, he is getting "The file
cannot be opened. Check that the file name and path are correct. Check that
the file format is recognized by Project. Project files saved in a version
earlier than Microsoft Project 98 can't be opened. If your file is from an
earlier version, open it in that version, click save as (file menu), and save
in MPX format. Open the MPX file in the currecnt version of Project. When you
use this method, project data is imported, but formatting is lost." Does
anyone know how to fix this?
Thanks,

Hi Barbara,

Welcome to this Microsoft Project newsgroup :)

Can you open his file on your PC? If so, you could try the suggestions in
FAQ Item: 43. Handling project file corruption and/or bloat.

FAQs, companion products and other useful Project information can be seen at
this web address:http://project.mvps.org/faqs.htm

Hope this helps - please let us know how you get on :)

Hi Mike,
Thank you for responding so quickly. I opened the project and tried to save
as a mpd file but I was unable to do that. Since I have Project Server 2007,
will I be able to do that? I also tried saving the file as a xml file and
then as an mpp but the project manager is still getting the same error. Do
you know of another way to fix this? This project already has actual hours in
it.

Thanks,

M

I'm afraid I don't :( Your PM will have to resort to his backup - he does
have one doesn't he?

It is possible that the server experts might have something up their
sleeves, so you might like to try posting on the server newsgroup. Please
see FAQ Item: 24. Project Newsgroups. FAQs, companion products and other
useful Project information can be seen at this web address:

Barbara,

A co-worker of mine has seen this this before and it was related to blank
lines either in or at the end of the project plan. SP1 seems to fix the
problem. If you don't have SP1, see if you can find the blank lines and
delete them.

Hi Jonathan,
Thank you for your help. I removed the blank lines in the project and the
project manager is able to make changes to his project now. I really
appreciate it.

Thanks,

I am really glad that was the solution for you. It can be so hard to
determine the root cause of these errors and yet be so simple to fix if you
know what it is.
