unable to select footer check box

I have saved off an existing company template under a new name so that I
could make some changes to it. It will not allow me to select the "footer"
check box in the slide master mode. It is not grayed out, I can check the
box but then it right away unchecks itself.

And in regular slide mode, under Insert/Text/Header&Footer I can select the
footer and type text in but it will not update on the little preview screen
nor on the actual slide.

Hi, assuming this is ppt 2007.
select the primary master slide (first in the master slides)
Insert the footer in the slide master tab through 'master layout group'/
master layout button - tick footer box.
this puts the footer in the first master. you will need to go through the
remaining master slides and check the footers box in the 'master layout
group' so that all your master slides have the footer box displayed.

then go back to normal slide mode and repeat - Insert/Text/Header&Footer as
you have tried before - it should work now.
