Unable to send and receive emails

When I first try to send an email, the following error
occurred:
'TASK 'HOTMAIL: FOLDER: INBOX SYNCHRONIZING HEADERS.'
REPORTED ERROR (0X800CCCF4): 'AN UNKNOWN ERROR HAS
OCCURRED. PLEASE SAVE ANY EXISTING WORK AND RESTART THE
PROGRAM.'
I am running winxp home edition and my internet
connection is using cable modem.
Would appreciate some help.
