Unable to send: Error 5.7.1

R

Richard

I am getting an error when sending messages with my
Entourage - Mac OS 9.2.2. I recieved the following error:
5.7.1 This system is not configured to relay mail from
<[email protected]> to <[email protected]> for 67.122.42.86

But I have no problems when I switch to a PC (Outlook
Express) with the same ISP using the same accounts. I went
to Tool/ Account/ Mail Tab/ Properties/ Servers Tab/ and
checked the box at "My server requires authentication" at
Outgoing Mail Server section.

I just can't figure why something that Outlook Express is
able to do while Entourage can not?

By the way, I was able to send messages to myself or
persons within our organiztion. Any help would highly
appreciated.

Under the tools menu, select 'accounts'.
Double-click on the account that is causing you problems to open it for
editing
Click on the 'advanced sending options' button towards the bottom of the
window
Make sure that 'server requires authentication' is checked (use same
settings as POP server).

Thank you very much, Barry.
But I'd tried that already and it still doesn't work.
Any other suggestion that might fix this? I would highly
appreciated.
Thanks again.

If you really feel brave, you could try installing TCPFlow and letting that
log a connection failure. Post the log here and a let us take a look at
what's happening (remove your password from the log before posting it!)

After playing with the settings for a while, it still
cannot send out mail. But a different message came out
when sending mail.
As follow:
Error
Mail could not be sent using the account "Richard"
Explanation
Mail error. The server did not understand the request.
Error 5500

I'm desparately seeking help for this. Thank you in
advance for any suggestion to solve this.

By the way, TCPflow is for OS X. I'm still using OS 9.
will it work? and what actually will it do for me? This
software cost at around $45? Many thanks for your
suggestion.

Are you using relay?

From the Error page:
<http://www.entourage.mvps.org/errors.html#anchor-error5550>

A message in your Outbox could not be sent using account "xxx." The server
did not recognize the recipients or the server refuses to allow you to send
mail.

Explanation:

Relaying is prohibited

Thanks Diane, I don't think I'm using relay. I could still
send out mail but only with a PC (Outlook Express) with
same ISP and same password settings. Only my Entourage is
having this problem.
By the way my error message is 5500 not 5550. Any other
suggestions that I could check on? Many thanks.

Thanks Diane, I don't think I'm using relay.

Relay would show in your SMTP settings. Example relay.pair.com

Ooops, sorry about that. Often errors that are close together have similar
fixes. This appears to be coming from your server.

You could try deleting the account and create new. Be sure not to paste in
an extra space.

There is testing software named tcpflow that enables you to make a recording
of all the traffic flowing into and out of your computer.

<http://www2.entropy.ch/download/tcpflow-0.20.dmg.gz>

Once you have installed tcpflow, you can activate it from the terminal. You
will need the administrator password.

For Ethernet port enter: sudo /usr/local/bin/tcpflow -i en0 -c

For PPP port enter: sudo /usr/local/bin/tcpflow -i ppp0 -c

1000 thanks, Diane.
But I'm having trouble opening up the program
<http://www2.entropy.ch/download/tcpflow-0.20.dmg.gz>
It does not open with Stuffit! By the way, I'm using mac
os 9. I sincerely appreciate for your advise.

Richard.
