unable to sort in Select Names box

T

Ted

I just migrated from 98se/OL 2000 to XP proff/OL 2002.
Now when I open a new email and click the "To..." button,
and it opens the "Select Names" box, and I go to select a
recipients email the fields won't let me sort like I used
to. Plus there are additional entries with fax numbers,
how do get it to sort and NOT display the fax number
entries?

Also, is there any way I can make this "Select Names" box
bigger so I don't have to scroll right to see the if it
is the correct email address if they have multiple email
address's?

Thanks Ted

Not in Outlook 2002. You have to use the horizontal scroll bar.

The standard behavior for the Outlook Address book is to display all
electronic addresses (both fax and e-mail). That behavior cannot be changed.
The only way to prevent the display of fax numbers is to store them in a
different field or to disguise them (e.g., precede them with an alpha
character) so that Outlook won't recognize them as phone numbers.
There are also a number of utilities available that can do this for you
automatically. Some are listed here:

Ok, I'll learn to live with sifting thru the contacts
with fax numbers but what about the sort function by
clicking on the field title? I can't imagine they would
do away with such a useful function as that.

Actually that has never been a feature of the Outlook Address Book. Only the
Windows Address Book does that. You must have been using IMO mode before,
which is more like Outlook Express than Outlook.
You sort the Outlook Address Book here:
Tools > E-mail accounts > View or change existing directories or address
books > Outlook Address Book > Change. > Set your sort order

I don't know what IMO mode is or even how to change it,
when I first started using OL 2000 I just installed it
without any changes.

I followed your menus to sort the address book but that
seems to be fine. In fact when I go to "Contacts" and
select Tools> Organize> the "Ways to Orgainze Contacts"
pops up and if you select "Phone List" it looks like an
Excel sheet and you can sort any column by clicking on
the column title. This is exactly the missing sort
function that used to be available in the "Select Name"
window when I opened a "new" email and clicked on
the "To" button.

Is there a diffence between an Address book and Contacts?

No. The Address Book is simply a views of the electronic addresses in your
Contacts Folder.

For information on the difference between mail support modes, look here:
