Unable to turn off punctuation, MS Word 2002

I am unable to turn off punctuation marks in all views of a document
in MS Word 2002. Yes, I know about deselecting "View-Punctuation
Marks" but deselecting this has no effect on removing the punctuation
marks. The inability to remove punctuation marks appeared from one day
to the next, previously I had no problem and the template does not
appear to have been changed recently. The document prints without
punctuation marks. Does anyone have a fix for this--constantly viewing
punctuation marks and editing marks sprayed across the page is
irritating. Thanks.

Assume you mean formatting marks. (Punctuation marks are periods and commas,
etc: turning them off would be wierd indeed.) Try again with the checkboxes
on Tools > Options > View. Perhaps you have 'All' checked, even though the
individual checkboxes are cleared.

If your attempt to "turn them off" was limited to clicking the Show/Hide ¶
button on the Standard toolbar, then perhaps you do not realize (as most
users do not), that this does not simply toggle the display of formatting
marks on and off. What it does is toggle between display of *all* formatting
marks and those that are explicitly selected on the View tab of Tools |
Options. Go to Tools | Options | View and make sure that all the boxes are
cleared.
