Unable to uninstall Office 2000 due to MAPI error in Registry

I am unable to uninstall Office 2000 or upgrade to Office 2003. It continues
to give me an error saying that a MAPI file can not be found in the registry
at the location HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\Software\Microsoft Windows\Current
Version\Setup\Optional Components\MAPI.

Does anyone know how to fix this problem?
