Unable To Update Office 2000

Hi, I just found out that Microsoft has stupidly stopped supporting office
update. As I have just reformatted my computer, I need to reinstall all of
the security updates, but i'm running into problems.

The first update that i've always had to install in the past is the SR-1
update. When I try to install it though, it tells me:

"An error has occured. Please check office 2000 SR-1 Setup(0002).txt for
detailed information".

I had to run a search on my computer because I wasn't told where this file
was located. This is what the error log stated:

Starting execution.

Error: The Office 2000 SR-1 Core Update patch is missing or invalid.
Microsoft Office 2000 SR-1 setup ended prematurely because of an error.

Since it says the file size was wrong, I assumed it was a corrupted download
and tried redownloading it. Again it came up with the same error message.

So I tried installing the Office SP2 update. But it told me that I needed
the SR-1 update first. Then I tried the Office SP3 update, and was again told
I needed SR-1. I then tried downloading the SR-1 update a third time, and
again was told to check the above log file for the error message - which had
exactly the same error message as last time.

Does anyone know why the installation is failing and how I can make it
install?

I have Windows XP Home and have run Windows Update without problems. I've
installed all of the updates that are available.

And why did Microsoft stop supporting Office Update? That seems like a big
step backwards, not forwards.

This has come up many times recently.
Check out this message board for similar threads .... one example would be
"Office Updates" of 8/25
