Unable to update Office 2003

Henry

Following installation of Office 2003 (leaving a previous
version of Office 2000 intact) I cannot check or apply any
updates. I reach a screen headed "Error Unable to check
for updates on this computer".
The error message goes on to suggest I may not have
administrative priviledges (I do), that there may be a
network problem (there is not) or there may be
missing .MSP files (they appear to be where they should
be).

Suggestions appreciated.

I was able to successfully download and install the
updates manually from the following url,
http://office.microsoft.com/officeupdate/downloads.aspx?
CategoryID=CD010224941033&CTT=4&Origin=ES790020041033.

I have the same problem using the check for updates. I
too have .msp files in the c:\windows\installer directory
but exactly which files should be there?

Additional comments regarding my environment: I have an
MSDN subscription and recently installed Visual
Studio .NET Enterprise Architect 2003. I'm unable to un-
install Visual Studio .NET Enterprise Architect 2002?

Have either one of you recently used the System Restore feature in Win XP?
.
Nope, but the hard disk was replaced as a precaution
because of one or two (non-critical) bad sector errors.
The disk was cloned using a utility supplied by Maxtor.
Almost everything worked as before, but I recall some
initial windges from Office 2000 (before 2003 was
installed as well). One or two applications required re-
registering. Is this a clue? How does one get out of this
without a re-build?
