Unable to use header/footer?

Steff

I'm not sure what happened to my office but I'm unable to add headers,
footers, page numbers, cover pages, etc. How might I go about getting those
back? They're extremely important in MLA and APA formats, especially since
I'm a lowly college kid.

(Also, if I re-install Office, will all of my files be deleted as well? I
was going to transfer them to a USB drive anyway but I want to be sure before
I do anything drastic.)

Thanks,
Steff

Highly likely is that you may have toggled on the Hide White Space feature.
Move the mouse pointer over the tiny gap between the pages until the pointer
changes to two opposing arrows. Double-click or Ctrl+Click depending on your
version of Word.

I don't hide the white space; the problem is when I click on Page
Numbers...Top of Page.........

Nothing comes up. I don't have the option to insert a page number. I've
tried uninstalling it and re-installing it, and that did not do anything. Is
there a way that I can just reset the entire ribbon rather than just the
quick access toolbar?

Uninstalling/reinstalling is a waste of time as it doesn't reset the
registry or remove users' and third party gaffs.

If you don't have the HideWhiteSpace accidentally toggled, then maybe you
have set the Header and Footer margins to zero, thus providing nowhere for
the page numbers to be inserted.

What do you mean by 'I don't have the option to install page numbers'? This
seems a completely different problem than you first posted:

<<< I'm not sure what happened to my office but I'm unable to add headers,
footers, page numbers, cover pages, etc. >>>

Are you saying that the items are missing from the Ribbon or that nothing
happens when you click on the buttons?
Are there any error messages in the Control bar at the bottom of the screen
when you try to do this?
Have you locally installed a compatible printer driver?
Are you able to create a document and save it?
Are you able to open and edit old documents.

Please give us an ACCURATE description of your problem.

I click "insert" / "page numbers", that works, but when I select any of the
next options (e.g. "Top of page") that action does take me any further
options to select except "save selection as a page number", which is grayed
out (unless I have highlighted first some text.)

I am using msword 7 that came with an enterprise package. Everything else is
working fine (that I know of); I have installed a new printer, hp officejet
8500;

That sounds like maybe your building blocks gallery (which is where I
believe the page numbering options are stored) is either missing or corrupt.
If you go to Insert, Quick Parts, Building Block Organiser, can you see and
use other items listed?
