Unable to use office 97 after windows update installed

I recently installed a recommended UPDATE. Now, none of my office-97
programs work. I am getting a message that implies that I can no longer use
office-97 and have to "buy" a new version. I object, STRONGLY! If I want
new features available in newer versions of OFFICE, I will buy a version that
supports the features I want to buy. If I am satisfied with using the
features in my currently installed office-97, I should not be forced to buy a
newer version that contains features I do not NEED. Please advise how to
un-do this disabling of my office-97 product so I may get on with my life.

What version of Windows, what was the update you installed and what is the exact message you are getting and what are the steps
you're using when you get that message?
