Unable to use OneNote icon

I use Offfice XP and purchased the academic version of OneNote. I am a not a
sophisticated Windows user. I inserted the CD and loaded OneNote as
directed, choosing all the recommended settings. I haven't been able to get
the icon to work. I receive this message: "C:\Documents and
Settings\Kate\Desktop\OneNote.exe is not a valid Win32 application" I have
no idea what this means or how to fix it. Any ideas?

I'm not sure what you mean when you say you can't get the icon to open.
I guess you mean the program won't open when you click on the desk top
short-cut. It could be as simple as you have a bad short-cut. Will the
program open from the program menu?

You can always uninstall the whole thing and start over. That sometimes
works.

Well - it looks like the shortcut icon you are clicking on is pointing to
the wrong place. It's looking for OneNote.exe on your desktop, which is the
wrong place. Email me directly and I'll try and walk you thru a fix.
