Unable to use parameter prompt in query for merge letter

Two machines are using the same merge document and same
Access database. The query on which the merge document is
based has a parameter prompt. One user gets a select table
message or else Word freezes up, the other is able to run
the merge consistently after supplying the parameter. What
might account for this difference?
