Unable to use symbol font in word 2004

I've upgraded recently to word 2004, but I am unable to use symbol
policy and get a blank square instead of any symbol characters.

How can I resolve this issue ?

Details are given very heavily in the second volume of my Take Control
ebook about Word 2004, but the short version is that you should not use
Symbol at all - use the Character Palette to enter special characters,
or a keyboard layout. This is Unicode now, and you want to use
characters, not fonts. m.
