Unable to use Word 2000 SR1

Jennifer

Please forgive me if I've included too much info, but I
thought it would be helpful. For the past couple of
weeks I have been unable to use Word. I have consulted
the information re: problems opening Word at
http://www.mvps.org/word/FAQs/AppErrors/ProbsOpeningWord.h
tm
and have tried the following:
Repair
Uninstalling & Reinstalling
Virus scan
I can open and use Word in safe mode (winword.exe /a)

I wanted to try renaming normal.dot as suggested, but I
cannot find it. How do I find it? I've searched the
computer and in templates and cannot locate it.

My startup folder in office is empty (is this the same as
word's startup path?)

Initially opening Word I would get the following message:
Microsoft Word for Windows has encountered a problem and
needs to close. The Error Signature is as follows:
AppName: winword.exe AppVer: 9.0.0.3822 ModName:
winword.exe ModVer: 9.0.0.3822 Offset: 00395c27
After Uninstalling Word and Reinstalling it and
Uninstalling the Works add-in I can get to Word and use
every tab on the toolbar except for Tools and File. If I
click on either of those I get the same message as above
and have to shut down.

Thanks in advance for any assistance.

You probably cannot find these files because you are hiding system files.
Open Windows Explorer and use Tools, Folder Options, View tab and chose to
show System Hidden Files and Folders and clear the check boxes for the two
Hide options. You will then find Normal.Dot under C:>Documents and
Settings>Username>Application Data> Microsoft>Template.

Uninstalling and reinstalling NEVER works. You current symptoms suggest that
you may have corrupted the registry settings for Office, but if you now
follow the suggestions at
http://www.mvps.org/word/FAQs/AppErrors/ProbsOpeningWord.htm you will
probably find a solution.

Simple solution then. Excellent.

Terry

I found normal.dot and renamed it. That fixed the
problem! Thank you so much!
