Unable to view file versions in word

I'm using Word on a mac and have been saving multiple versions so that
i can track editing changes as i go. suddenly word has taken to
freezing whenever i try to view any but the most recent version or two.
any advice on if this can be remedied? why it happened? and how i can
avoid it in the future? would be greatly appreciated.

You may do better to post this to a Mac-specific Word newsgroup, but
assuming file versions are similar I'd say the big mistake here was using
Word's versions feature. You don't need them to track changes, they lead to
huge file sizes and potential corruption, and are the worst possible
strategy for document management - when the file goes, you lose all previous
versions as well as the current one!

You'll need to salvage what you can from the existing document and backups -
save the versions in separate files, and decorrupt (in WinWord the current
best method seems to save as HTML and then re-open, but pasting text into a
fresh document may be necessary.)

To keep versions in future, save separate dated or numbered copies of the
document files. To track changes in each version, turn off tracking once
you've made the copy, accept the changes stored in the previous version,
then start tracking again.
