Unable to view file versions in word

I'm using Word on a mac and have been saving multiple versions so that
i can track editing changes as i go. suddenly word has taken to
freezing whenever i try to view any but the most recent version or two.
any advice on if this can be remedied? why it happened? and how i can
avoid it in the future? would be greatly appreciated. Thanks!

What version of Word?

Are you actually using Word's Versions feature, under File | Versions? That
has been known to corrupt documents. You might want to try the corrupt
document fixes, listed here:
http://word.mvps.org/MacWordNew/DocumentCorruption.htm
(hit reload a few times in Safari, if that doesn't work, try another
browser)
Try the fixes ON A COPY.

And use Save As #9, etc, in future. Tools | Compare Documents will let you
see the differences between #8 and #9, assuming the doc isn't hundreds of
pages.
