Unable to view office files in IE

Why can't I view office files in IE? I just get the
placeholder icon in IE whenever I download an office file
instead of IE opening the file. This used to work--how
do I get it back? I'm using IE 6.0, Windows XP
Professional, and Office 2000 Professional.
