Unaccessible buttons

I am having trouble beginning a new word document. The majority of my buttons
are shaded and I can not open them. For example, if I am on the home page
every button is shaded so I can not click on them. I am also not able to
change anything on any existing documents. Also if I click on the orange
button the only options that I am able to access open, print, and close
options. Any suggestions? I'm sure there is an easy fix but I was unable to
find it in the help section.

Is this an expired trial version of Word 2007?
