unattended office 2007 MUI installation

Bob

How do I create an unattended MUI installation for an already installed
Office 2007 Enterprise configuration? When I run setup.exe /admin, I get an
error that the files are not available.

Are you sure you're running the setup from the Enterprise edition - that
sounds like an error you'd get with one of the non-volume license versions.

I didn't recognize there was a difference on the MUIs, I thought they were
all considered "products" and picked up the original installation. How can I
tell?

OK! How about if I dumb this down to only installing the proofing tools? I've
read and reread the following links, which contradict each other on a number
of points...

If an unattended installation doesn't work, PLEASE JUST TELL ME me and I'll
force every person in the domain to install the proofing tools manually.
Following the steps in each of these links fails seperately, trying to
combine them also fails.

The text of one site says "In an international environment, corporate
language requirements are often complex. For example, offices around the
world might need to use Office in multiple languages, or one user might need
to work with more than one language. The 2007 Microsoft Office system
accommodates these multilanguage scenarios efficiently and consistently."

Unfortunately, "consistently" here means "POORLY OR NOT AT ALL", and I'm
still trying to determine the definition for "efficiently" is. Maybe it means
"Give up, get a cup of coffee, and tell the end users to install it manually
to save your sanity and some time".

Can you tell I'm frustrated?

Which MUI installation are you trying to use? Do you have any MUI media?

Hi Bob,

If the folder in the Office Network Installation Point (or on the CD) is EnterpriseR.ww [R for retail] then you have a retail
(non-volume license) copy of Office 2007 Enterprise. That edition does not include the Office Cutstomization Tools and you don't
have the deployment part of Setup.

What is the location of the Proofing Tools/MUI products (i.e. did you add them to the Office Network Installation Point [oNIP] or
are you trying to add them from another location?

With that many references (listed below in your prior message) there's no easy way to determine what the steps and command lines
you've used, nor how to interpret your comment about the items conflicting on a number of points. Perhaps you can provide some
additional detail on the specifics that we could use to followup on ?

What is the version of Windows you're using?

What Language Packs and MUI editions are you using (not all of the languages are released yet).

How did you do the initial deployment and what edition and configuration/languages are those workstations in?

What is the end configuration goal you're trying to achieve?

I can confirm that this is broken and M$ has no intention to fix this. I just
got nowhere dealing with Office support guys that keep sending me links but
don't even try to reproduce this issue. Currently there is no way to install
a single language pack (full or customized) in an unattended way onto an
existing Office 2007 installation (in my case Office 2007 Pro Plus VLM on XP
SP2 and Vista Enterprise).

B

Bob

I'm just pushing out the language packs through SMS and letting the end users
interact with the installation. I was just thinking about it, and am
wondering if you could create an answer file for the Office installation,
"slipstream" the language pack in it, and set the installation to "modify"
the original installation, thereby installing the language pack unattended.

One of the links explained how to add the language pack files to a new
installation just by copying them into the folder structure and adding
entries into the config.xml file of the Office folders (copy it to a local
drive, etc), and then the Office installation recognizes them. I've added two
language packs in this way to all new installations of Office being pushed by
SMS and it has worked very well, but I haven't tried pushing it to any
clients with Ofice 2007 already installed.

As my workaround is working OK, and I've moved on from there, I won't have
the time to try it, but if you do, let me know how it goes - (and Microsoft
support, too. That way they'll be able to support their own products better
the next time...)
