undelete files

J

Johanna

I'll try to describe my problem briefly . . .

I am traveling and using a laptop (M400) that is not my primary laptop (M4).
To have access to my everyday files, I've got my primary laptop's (M4) hard
drive in the opitcal drive (in a case made for it - to extend the drive).
I've been using OneNote all week . . . at some point I copied the My
Notebook folder from the M4 drive to the M400. I wound up with My Notebook on
the M4 and within it, a My Notebook folder from the M4.

Are you still with me?

I got sick of trying to make sure I was using the right My Notebook and
decided that to solve this problem I would once and for all replace the M400
My Notebook with the M4 My Notebook.

Now I need to undo that! I lost files! Lost! Notes I've been taking all week
are gone, work I did in OneNote on the M400 a few weeks ago are gone.
ahhh!!!!!!

I tried a system restore but it didn't work. Help me! Please! Please!

I don't think you can undo this. Sorry, but you overwrote a folder and
there is no way to go back. The only hope you might have is that if you
deleted the folder first, it might be in the recycle bin.

Please!

A system restore will not work as the data in "My Documents" are
excluded from the recovery system.

Sad as it sounds: If you do not have backups there would be a chance
for recovery only if you had some undelete protection like Norton
Undelete. The latter has saved me quite some times.

have you tried asking brian or bill at work? they seem like they are pros at
it...just a thought.

oh sorry...i work with her at ruby's in huntington beach. brian is our
resident tablet tech and bill is our national retail sales trainer who uses
onenote extensively.

come to think of it j, shawn might also know but he's more hardware than
software...worth a shot...

OneNote makes some automated backups of your notes (by default its 1 per day
and we keep on the last 2 copies).

No promises, but it might help. File->Open Backup.
or
C:\Documents and Settings\<username>\Local Settings\Application
Data\Microsoft\OneNote\Backup

In the future, just keep your notebook on a file/sharepoint server and open
the notebook over the network from both laptops. OneNote will automatically
cache those files locally, allow you to edit them when you're disconnected,
and merge your changes when you reconnect to the network.

Hope that helps.

This won't help now.
But in the future you'd benefit a lot from the mew automatic synching
features. It's really great how the problems of using different
computers is handled in ON2007.

Hi David -

Thank you for your post. When you have a moment, it'd be great if you'd
provide more detailed directions as when I pull up Documents and
Settings/Riggle I don't get to any kind of local settings folder. I get to a
place that shows me Contacts, Cookies, Desktop, Favorites, My Documents,
Start Menu and User Data. I did a quick search for an "application data"
folder but nothing's come up. Maybe -- and I can't believe I'm asking for it
-- you should talk to me like I'm three? Oh how I do loath to request such
treatment but I'll take my lumps as I'm the goofball that lost my notes.

Uhhh, wanna tell me more or point me to a link where I can learn more? It
doesn't happen all that often that I pull the HDD out of my primary system
and throw it in a secondary laptop but since it got me into trouble this
time, the synching thing might be good to know about. Thanks for your posts.

Okay, I got it! Please do disgregard request to guide me as though I'm a
three year old. I'm not sure that I'm going to find my stuff but I do feel
like with this step, I've given it my best shot and can put it to rest.
Thanks for your help.

When you are in the folder where you see Desktop etc, click Tools,
Folder Options, View. Under Hidden files and folders, select show hidden
files and folders. Now click OK and you should see a Local Settings
folder now.

Uhhh, wanna tell me more or point me to a link where I can learn
more? It doesn't happen all that often that I pull the HDD out of my
primary system and throw it in a secondary laptop but since it got
me
into trouble this time, the synching thing might be good to know
about. Thanks for your posts.

Let me try it my own words:

1.) ON 2007 is based on the construction that *work* is done not
directly in the ONE-files but in a cache.
If one opens a notebook (in 2007 one can have as many notebook as one
likes) the data are kept in the cache.
When changes occur, the content of the cache and the ONE-files are
synched.

2.) If one works with ON on more than one computer:
a) In a network one would store the ONE-files on the server.
One does not store the notebooks locally.
The notebooks are opened locally (on the workstation) from the server
and the data are stored in the cache locally on the workstation.
Whenever changes occur, they are automatically synched to the
ONE-files.
This keeps the notebooks on *all* workstations in sync.

b) Similar with a desktop and a laptop.
aa) One stores the ONE-file on *one* computer only (the main one ,
mostly the Desktop as it has the bigger harddisk) and enables a
"share".
When the two machines are connected (LAN or WLAN) on the laptop one
opens the notebooks from the shared folder on the desktop.
The data are put into the laptops cache.
As long as the computers are connected, all changes get synched to the
ONE-file automatically.

bb) When the laptop is disconnected from LAN to go out, all changes
are done in the cache until it's re-connected.

cc) When the laptop comes home and gets re-connected to the LAN, all
changes are synched.
This works both ways. Therefore all changes made on the laptop will be
synched to desktop as well as changes made on the desktop are synched
to the laptop.

Hope this helps understand how fantastic OneNote works for working
with more than one machine and especially covers the needs of laptop
user.
