What version of excel are you using?

In xl2003, when I deleted a file from within the File|Open dialog, it went to
the recycle bin.

But if I recall correctly, this "feature" was added (I don't recall when).

But if you don't see the deleted file in the recycle bin, do you have a backup
elsewhere?

Pray it wasn't valuable to you or that your system is backed up otherwise
start re-creating it manually. It's lost if it wasn't backed up. Alcohol
sometimes helps at times like this.

Alcohol sometimes causes problems like this :)

Backup, or even just do a save as original-filename-backup.xls
followed by a quick save as original-filename.xls :)

Do it now with any other important files

It works like it should for me, this feature is in 2k and mine did go to the
recycle bin also.

Thanks Dave,

I'm using 2003 Service pack 2. Unfortunately, the file I deleted was on a
different network computer (not on my hard drive). It's no problem to
recreate but I was just curious where the files go that get deleted thru the
File/Open dialog.

If I recall correctly, deleting a file on a network drive won't hit the recycle
bin--even in windows explorer. (Same with a floppy, too???)

If those deleted files are on a local harddrive, they'll go into the recycle
bin.

If they're not, they're deleted -- gone forever in the great unknown!

(Kind of like hitting shift-delete key when deleting in Windows Explorer.)

Just remember that even local hard drives can opt out of using the recycle
bin.

Always test, by creating a copy, deleting it and trying to restore it.
