Underlining Columns

B

Brian

Using Word 2000. With decimal tabs, I have a column of numbers such
that the first 3 have 4 digits & 2 decimals and the last entry (the
4th) has 2 digits & 2 decimals. How can I underline the entire column
of numbers so that the underlining extends to the LEFT of the 4th
entry?

Thanks,

Brian

Add spaces before the last number until the underlining is long enough to
equal the four digits of the other numbers. This sounds crude, but it is the
best/only way I've found to do this in tabbed columns. In table columns
there are other options.

One option might just be to DRAW a line the desired length and position it
in the right position below your text.

Another option would be to set up your data in a table -- (you can use tabs
in table -- just hold control to tab instead of move from one cell to the
next). Then you can leave all table gridlines clear EXCEPT the desired
lines which you can make black (or any color of your choice.

Hopefully one of these two ideas will be of help.

Hi Suzanne:

Since numbers are usually an En space wide, would it not
be better to insert En spaces rather than white space?
With En spaces, when fonts are changed numbers usually
line up and may not with white space.

Very true, though I generally find that in TNR and Arial (which are the
fonts I use 99% of the time for this sort of thing), two spaces equal an en
space. And I find that in certain documents (or perhaps documents based on
certain templates) Word has a nasty habit of converting en and em spaces to
MS Mincho behind my back.
