unexpected ballooning of Word 2000 document size

I am editing a 180 page document in Word 2000 on a
Windows 98 machine. When I started it was about 800K, but
after a number of edits and substitutions, it suddenly
ballooned to 40MB. When I split the file into two halves,
both halves are also 40MB. It prints OK, but even the
smallest edits take many minutes to execute.
The document has many pictures (of Excel tables and
charts) many as enhanced metafiles to minimize document
size and alterations.
Any suggestions on how to get the file back down to a
manageable size would be appreciated.

Have you turned off Fast Saves. Tools | Options | Save tab | remove check
from Fast Saves. Once you do that then do another save by clicking the Save
button, Ctrl+S, or select Save from the File menu.

Also if you are using versions that will balloon the file.
