Unexpected quit on "print"

Word quits unexpectedly whenever I select "print." I recently got a
new HP printer and installed the (up-to-date) driver for it. The
problem seems to occur only when I'm in Word -- Excel documents print
just fine, for example. I've tried uninstalling and reinstalling the
printer driver, and removing all the printers from my Printer Setup
Utility, all to no avail. I haven't yet tried reinstalling Word...

HP Tech support says it's a Microsoft issue (of course they'd say
that). When there is NO printer in the set-up utility, Word doesn't
crash when I select "print," but of course then I can't print. And as
soon as I add a new printer to the list, Word crashes.

Any suggestions? Thanks.

Have you tried Reset Printing System in the menu of Print Setup Utility?
I had a problem with Print Setup being so slow that it was unusable, and
that cured it.
