Unexpected results when selecting text for formatting

Hi

Does anyone have any idea how to solve this problem: in
Word (97) I often find that when I select a piece of text
and then attempt to format it (eg bold, underline etc),
the change is applied to everything else except my
selection. I then have to undo the formatting change in
order to apply it to the text I intended, and remove the
effect from all the other text. This occurs whether
carried out via a key stroke, through the formatting menu
or using the toggle switches on the toolbar.

Really grateful for any advice as it's a bit of a pain.
