Unexpected shut down and restart

M

Martin

Since some weeks when working in Word 2003 (XP SP2) my screen turns off en my
system is shutting down and restarts. After restart it doesn't report Windows
error; so it seems to be a normal restart.

I can not trace the problem. Does anyone know what causes the problem and
how to fix it?

Hi Martin:

Daiya's correct: this is a Macintosh newsgroup. The reason we're using Word
on the Macintosh is that the Macintosh is less likely to do this sort of
thing :)

However, I have a PC too, so I have some experience here...

The key to this is that you say that your SCREEN turns off. That indicates
a video driver failure. Word is one application that hits the video driver
quite hard: so it can find a weakness if there is one to be found.

My suggestion is this:

1) Install Microsoft Defender and allow it to do a full system scan.

2) Update your antivirus program and allow it to do a full system scan.

There is not point in going further until you have done the first two: the
most likely cause of this condition is something you have installed from the
Internet, most likely without even knowing you have installed it.

3) Now go to the Microsoft Update site and install EVERYTHING it offers you
(not just the "critical" updates, you want everything). Then go to the
Office Update site and do the same.

4) Finally, go to the website for the manufacturer of your computer
(preferably) or the website for the manufacturer of your video-card and
update to the latest released driver for the video card.

If you do all four things, chances are your problem will be cured.

However, if you do not do all the steps, chances are you will keep the
problem. This is very likely to be a piece of malware such as a virus or a
trojan.

Cheers
