unexpected state DAO error message

Whenever I try to access my file, I get this error
message: This file is in an unexpected state;Microsoft
can't open it."This database has been converted from a
prior version of Microsoft Access by using a DAO
compactdatabase method......"
It is a very long message, but I really need help on this.
Does anybody know what this means and how to fix it?

I had this message with only one user in a workgroup - a new one. After much troubleshooting found the user had no groups - not even 'user' to his name. After I added the required groups to the user everything was fine. I use a tool to create and edit users and groups so this may inadvertently been my fault (deleting the user). But note it had nothing to do with the message.

I'm using XP but with an unconverted '97 era mdw, compacted regularly from the interface Good luck.
