Unexpectedly Quit

After updating office to 10.1.4 on a 500MHz PowerBook G3 (Pismo) with 512MB
RAM running MacOS 10.2.8 I can not keep word running long enough for it to
be useful. It seems to randomly quit within moments of starting. I have
already removed all duplicate fonts on my system. Verified fonts with
FontAgent Pro and removed all Word preference files. Nothing seems to work
and I need to use word. Any thoughts?

Clean install of Panther
Clean install of Word

Did the updates and all seemed to go fine. I saw the trouble some
people were having with the update(s) but it seems fine here.

Are there fundamental problems with Word and Panther? It randomly
quits and it's almost totally useless. Are there more stable builds
that I should stick to instead of the updates? Any ideas?

Are you running any 3rd party software like Unsanity's WindowShadeX ?
I (think) I figured it out in my case; at least for Word and Panther
which I couldn't keep running, until I put Word on WindowshadeX's
exclude list....now it seems to be fine. Worth check out....

You might also want to try replacing your normal.dot template. I was
having a similar problem -- Word was quiting about 5 seconds after it
was launched under Panther. After trying a number of other things, I
tried removing Normal.dot figuring it might have gotten corrupted.
Sure enough that solved the problem for me.

I am having this same problem with Word from Office 2001, having
upgraded to Panther from 9.2.2. The application runs fine on my iBook
running 10.2. I tried repairing permissions, removing extensions,
moving normal to the desktop etc. Now I am FRANTIC and considering
trashing Panther. Is the best solution upgrading to a more recent
version of Word, or do the same kinds of problems persist?

Thanks for any help
Ellen
