Unexplainable error and inability to close Entourage X

This happens intermittently. Last before tonight was a few days ago and I
repaired permissions immediately following:

I am getting my mail in Entourage and I attempt to view a message in a
preview pane. I then suddenly get a window pop up that has the message
"there has been an error". If I click on another message I get the error pop
up window. Then if I move (without clicking) my mouse over the mail, addre
book, calendar, etc icons they disappear and turn gray. When I try to quit
Entourage nothing happens. Trying to force quit from the dock does not work
either. Finally I can quit by doing an old fashioned force quit
(cmd-opt-esc). Then when I restart, the program seems to work.

Anyone have a clue as to what is causing this instability?

The indications you give can be the sign of a light
corruption of your database. So you could try rebuilding
the database: Launch Entourage while holding the "Option"
key down.
