unexplained spaces in address labels in mail merge from excel

I have an excel doc that I am merging to word for address
labels. The merge is fine, except that on each label there
is a several-character sized space between the city and
state. ie, Los Angeles ,CA. I can't find out where
the space came from, but out of several hundred addresses
it is there on almost every one. I can't see a difference
in my worksheet between the ones with the space and
without it. I can't see how to fix without manually
editing each label, which isn't possible. HELP!

Which version of Word/Excel, and how are you inserting your addresses?
Multiple fields, or an ADDRESSBLOCK field?
