unexplicable error: document path not valid?!???

M

Michael Moser

I have a document that I suddenly can't open any more. Whenever I try
to open it (be it by double-clicking on it or by starting word and
then locating the file via the Open... dialogue box) I get an error
message
--------------------------------
The document name or path is not valid.
Try one or more of the follwoing:
* Check the path to make sure it was types correctly
* On the File menu, click Open. Search for the file using this dialog
box.
--------------------------------

The path IS valid (and contains no special characters, not even a
blank or anything else suspicious) and it used to work until
yesterday.
The suggested variant via File => Open doesn't work either.

Any idea, what could cause this or how to overcome this and open that
darn file???

Is this definitely just that one document? This would indicate that the
document may be corrupt. Have you tried opening it on a different computer?

Which version of Word and OS are you using and is this a standalone or
networked PC?

yes and yes.

networked PC?
Word 2002 (& SP3), WinXP (& SP2)

I managed to recover the document using the "Open and Repair" option
(which I hadn't been aware of before...). It reported several errors
in some figures but apparently nothing was lost nor really badly
damaged.

Regards,
Michael
