unformated notes

How can I determine that notes are not written in formated text but in
unformated/plain text?

Hi Friedrich,

There may be a more graceful way to do this, but my method, which I do
all day long, is: open up a plain TextEdit doc, paste in the
questionable text, highlight it, copy it, and the resulting text is
most definitely stripped of any formatting.
