Ungroup Excel OLE - Some symbols changing to question marks

Hi,

I have an Excel OLE worksheet which has some cells having up and down arrows
(for statistical significance testing). - (with Chrw code of 8593 and 8595 -
also inserted using Insert symbol feature - Arial font)

Presently am automating the production of the above Excel OLE with new data
sets.

Before sending it over to my client am supposed to UNGROUP the excel OLE in
to text-boxes as client doesnt want to edit the same in the Excel
application.

Now, when I do the same in my Excel OLE the arrows changes to question
marks.

Does that mean that in textboxes one cannot have the ability of arrows.

Please guide me.

Thanks a lot,
Hari

Hari,
Steve R is our resident King of Ungroup. He swears by it most of the
time. I swear at it most of the time. Wait for him for a few minutes.
I'm having my own problems with embedded XL OLE objects like I've
never had before.

Of course these are not XL objects I created so they probably are not
behaving like my well-behaved XL objects.

Hi Brian/Steve,

Thanks for the reply
and paste as EMF into PPT then ungroup that.
Actually I need to update an OLE excel sheet in a PPT template with new
data. This OLE excel already has lots of common formatting.

For me pasting as a picture and then ungrouping did not seem to help me.

Is there any way where I may update an Excel OLE in PPT having arrows and
after ungrouping am still able to retain the arrows.

Or another possible solution is to run a macro in PPT which turns all
Question marks in textboxes within a PPT in to arrows (I checked and found
that arrows can be inserted in to text-Boxes manually and I believe it would
be possible through VBA as well.) Is this a feasible solution. i have too
many slides and PPT's and it seems doing find/replace using macro might just
add more complexity to already bloated project.

One more way reason the above solution is bad is because I might have more
symbols or incompatible characters which might also turn in to question
marks and this might also get replaced by arrows. hence worried.

Also if I give a name to an OLE object and subsequently ungroup it is there
any specific naming schemes for the "newly" created objects (that is based
on the name of the parent object) or does PPT follow the default convention.
(I tried it and it did not follow the naming convention based on parent
object) This was important for me because before ungrouping excel wksheets
in to textboxes, i would already be knowing the name of the excel OLE and if
after ungrouping I could "guess" the names of the individual objects then I
could selectively check for textboxes with "new names" and change the
question marks to arrows. This way other question marks would not be
changed.

Hari
