Ungrouping PICT files makes picture different, please help.

I am trying to re-work some diagrams that are like trees:

(the diagram keeps coming apart, but it's just branching lines.

I am importing or pasting PICT files into ppt and then ungrouping them
so I can make lines thicker, different colors, etc. When I ungroup
the trees, the tips are no longer branches, but boxes! But only on
some of them. Please help! I think this used to work on PPT 97 or
one of the really early versions, but I can't get it to work now. Any
suggestions?

Hi Sue,

What version of PowerPoint are you using? What is the source of the PICT
files?
